UPDATED HAIRCARE ROUTINE

After a little change for my hair, I thought it'd be a good time to update you all on my haircare routine. Really, I don't change things up all that much... But I wanted to share something more comprehensive to tick off a few questions I've had in the past. To be fair though, I do feel like my routine works quite well for me. On the whole I'm okay with my hair - other than the odd 'shave my head now' days when it just decides to live its own life.

Right, I'm off as I've been editing all day and I really want to make the most of a Sunday evening eating a sickening amount of crisps & Mini Eggs while watching Wolverine. Rock & roll guys.

10 BEAUTY TIPS & TRICKS THAT ACTUALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE

I flipping love a good beauty tip. Whether it's how to get brows that actually look like they belong to each other, or the best way to shave your legs without morphing into an extra from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I want to know it all. I've definitely spent too much of my life watching beauty hack videos, which has helped with compiling this little list, but I've also picked up a few just through general trial and error. These are all my favourites - the ones that actually made me think 'why have I not been doing this all my life?'.

1. Apply hair products to both sides of your hair.
This sounds really stupid, but it's one I realised through using too much toner on my hair. After drying my hair, I noticed that the OTT purple tones were a lot more obvious on one side of my hair – which is also the side that’s in better condition... It's much thicker and doesn't have so many rats’ tails. It got me thinking, and I worked out that that’s the side I tend to pull my hair round to when I apply product. Conditioner, leave in treatments, shine serums - I always take my hair over to my left shoulder to work in the product. So, I figured that the other side isn’t getting quite the same treatment. Since then, I've been making sure I apply product on both sides, going through my hair properly. I'll also try to comb things through when I've got time. It seems really obvious, but it was a habit I’ve only just realized I’ve had for years!

2. Use good cotton wool.
A little one that I noticed when a makeup artist was cleansing my skin for a shoot. I was asking her which micellar water she was using to take my makeup off with, as it felt really gentle on my skin. It turned out it was the Garnier one I use every freaking day of my life, only instead of using the cheapest of cheap cotton wool pads, she was using slightly better quality ones. I'm not saying it needs to be as good as linen you'd wrap a royal baby in, but a step up from the super cheap options has made a big difference for me.

3. Take selfies.
As silly as we all know selfies can be, seeing pictures of myself has helped loads with my makeup. It's just another way to get a different view. I find it’s especially helpful for doing eyeliner. Gahhhd I hate trying to get that super sharp flick - I find it so difficult to get both eyes even, and taking a picture helps me to see where I may or may not have made one eye look drunk.

4. Pat don't rub.
I feel like this is something Nannas pass onto us. An oldie, but a goldie. I think the 'pat don't rub' notion applies to so much with beauty these days - with contouring it's pretty major, no one’s got time to be rubbing off that new nose you've spent the last half hour skillfully crafting. With skincare though, I really try to pat rather than rub, as I can be a little too rough on my skin! I noticed that patting on moisturizer and eye cream helps my skin to feel way more plumped up.

5. Blow-dry your dry shampoo.
As a huge fan of dry shampoo, it's only recently that I've realised blow-drying is the way forward for getting the most out of it. Not only does it get rid of that talky looking scalp, but it's also a chance to blast in some extra volume when your hair is looking lank and crap.

7. Hand sanitise.
When we're meant to be keeping all those makeup brushes clean, it makes sense to have clean hands too. As someone with OCD, I'm biased towards hand sanitiser anyway... I hyperventilate a little when I can't find it in my bag. Lol. I do try to use it though to give my blemish prone skin the best possible chance. I make sure I keep some on hand in my makeup bag, and I also have it on my desk at work - if you're a serial face toucher like me then it's worth having around.

8. Check areas that need hydrating by leaving moisturisers/hydrating masks to soak.
A skincare specialist told me this one. Instead of just slapping on moisturisers and hydrating masks, it's good to keep an eye on how they're being absorbed.  The areas that suck moisture up the quickest are apparently the ones that are most in need of hydration. When I tried it, it was actually my forehead and chin soaking everything up. I'd been so intent on mattifying my t-zone, that I was also drying it out like a bit of old boot leather.

9. Sleep in braids.
Get all von Trapp family and give yourself some overnight French braids. I mainly try to sleep in plaits as it's easier for myself in the morning - it's good for avoiding major bed head issues. I do still think it's one of the better ways to keep your hair in good nick though. I just find my hair stays a lot smoother when it hasn't been rolled about the bed. I tend to slap a whole load of leave in conditioner on before I braid it, so my hair can soak it up overnight - it really helps it stay nice and shiny!

10. Check lighting.
When your makeup looks the bomb then you see yourself in natural light and your contour is a hot mess. Killer. When possible, I try to check my makeup in different lights. I usually do this as I go, before any bronzing disasters are beyond repair. Chances are, I'm not going to get it to look perfect in every light *look at me in soft lighting with a Valencia filter only please*, but most major mishaps can be toned down with a quick lighting check.

I'm sure some of these you'll already be sussed up on, as some are kind of obvious when you think about it?! Sometimes I find it's the obvious ones that I forget about though!

DISTRESSED DENIM OUTFIT

If you were a reader of my blog way back when, you may well have seen one of my typical ‘I hate jeans’ rants. Through my teens up until my early 20s I was never a fan – uncomfortable, awkward fitting & just generally something I never got on with. I probably only had one or two pairs, and even then I’d wear them infrequently.

These days, I totally get whole ‘living in jeans’ thing. I do think this could be that I am a lot lazier with clothing choices these days – I love having a few pairs of jeans I can pick out and easily find something to pair with. Jeans are easy. It’s not like there’s all that ‘shit does this even go?’… You can lob on a baggy tee and that’s an outfit sorted.

The pair I’m wearing here are recent additions. I picked them up from Boohoo – really cheap, but they actually fit great! I always struggle with things being too big on the waist, but these aren’t that bad. I’d been on the lookout for a lighter, high waisted pair for yonks, so these fit the bill perfectly! For now I’ve been wearing them with my favourite roll necks, but I’m already looking forward to lighter shades to match them up with – the dusky pinks I’ve been lusting after in Topshop would be dreeeamy!

HAIR UPDATES | GOING FOR GREY

It was time for a change. Albeit a small one – I’d love to be the sort to brave dying my hair all the colours of the rainbow, but I’m just not. I love all these out there options for hair, but I’m someone that’s a total wimp when it comes to change… Hence why I’ve always had hair along the ‘long and blonde’ lines. After internally debating, I decided to change it up for a few weeks with a few grey tones!

Yup, I know grey is kind of the ‘thing’ right now, but that doesn’t really put me off – if I like it, I like it. It seemed like a good idea for making a teeny weenie change, as it was only a case of adding some toner to my hair. It won’t last forever - this sort of grey rinse will probably wash up over the coming weeks, so if I had decided I didn’t like it, it wouldn’t have been a biggie. I’m loving it right now, but over summer it’s likely I’ll fancy that beachy blonde look again.

So, what did I ask my hairdresser for? In the lead up I did a lot of Pinterest/Instagram stalking, mostly searching #greyombre and compiling a folder full of screenshots featuring my favourite styles. I find it so difficult to explain what I’m after at the hairdressers, taking a few pictures always works much better for me! The ones below are just a few from in my ‘Grey Hair Inspo’ pin board – I’m sure quite a few of these are photoshopped, but they got across the look I was after. Cooler tones, with grey ends. My Nanna totally doesn’t get why I’ve died my hair the colour she’s trying to get rid of, but for me it’s the perfect shade for trying something new, without feeling too out of my comfort zone!

NATURAL EYES & A BROWN LIP

I had chance to film my makeup this weekend, and I actually ended up really liking how it turned out. Sometimes when I film while I'm getting ready it ends up being a whopping disaster... Then naturally, the times when my makeup goes right I haven't bothered to film. I was just having a casual day, editing blog stuff & heading to the hairdressers, so I went mostly quite natural. I've just gone for a bit of shimmer on my eyes with a bolder lip. After buying way too many liquid lipsticks in the last few weeks, I've had a few different lip products I've been making the most of trying out!

Normally I'm all matte when it comes to eyeshadow, but I really loved wearing the shimmer! It's making me get even more excited for summer, and all those glowy makeup looks. Bring on another level of highlighting!

BLOG POST IDEAS FOR DOWN DAYS

I find blogging can be really therapeutic. There's just something comforting about knowing you've got this little place where you can go and write whatever crap you want. When I'm just having one of those 'what is my life' sort of days, I love to come on here and type away. I guess it's a good escape, but I've also found a few 'mood booster' posts I can opt for when I'm needing to get back track with being a happy bun.

Get personal.
Everyone knows that a good rant sometimes does you the world of good. I don't share too much personal-personal stuff online, but I do like to have a good whinge about blogging when I feel the need. I always feel so much better for it, getting things off my chest and hearing back with what other people think. Chances are, there'll be someone out there feeling the same way. I've had some lovely comments in the past that have really perked me up when I've been being a misery guts.

Talk about the stuff that makes you happy.
From monthly favourites to cuddles with your cat (that'd be me). It just makes sense that talking about happy stuff gives you the feel good factor. It's a bit of positivity, and when I'm down in the dumps, that's what I need. Something that's going to force me to think about the bits I should be happy about. I think Kate La Vie's Five Good Things posts are a faaab example - I love reading them, and it kind of spurs me on to think of little things that are nice right now.

Share some blog love.
Passing on positive vibes is one hell of a good feeling. Being nice is contagious. I also think it's really inspiring, to look through some amazing blogs that get you all motivated and stuff. Less of the 'oh crap she's amazing I'm rubbish' and more of the 'wow, she's amazing, I could do something like that one day', y'know?!

Compile some daily snippets from a good day out.
You know the coffee pictures, and the really nice lunch you went for and that daft picture of the cutest pug ever. I'm forever taking pictures when I'm out, and even though the majority of them never make it onto the Internet, they're all nice little memories I can't quite bear to part with (you never know when you might need that second angle shot of your Starbucks panini). It may only be sticking a few snaps together that'll be a reminder of something lovely, but it can be a real pick me up.

Write relevant lists.
You know those daft lists you see on Buzzfeed? 10 times Harry Potter made me question my life choices, that sort of thing? I'm obsessed with them, constantly reading through and thinking 'lol yup, applies to me'. Just like they're pretty fun to read, they're also pretty fun to write. I did a few back on blogging last year and I loved sitting down to think about all the relevant stuff that I thought we could all relate to. At the minute memo on my phone full of unfinished ones - I just add to them as I go, eventuallyyyy, they may make it online!

As much as I love talking clothes and makeup and selfie sticks, it's also nice to use blogging as a bit of self-help. I'd definitely recommend doing a blog that's private too - if you're not keen on getting personal & putting it out there, then I've loved having a private blog as somewhere I can just write away, typos & all.

WEARING MATCHING TONES

Okay, so actually more of a camel mis-match, but I'm still loving this sort of thing recently - wearing shades from a similar palette. I was going to go for my camel coat too, but as I’ve been wearing it far too much I went for the grey… It’s still one of my favourite colour combinations anyway.

The leggings were an inexpensive newbie I added to my wardrobe last week. I just wanted something camel to wear on my bottom half as I’ve got loads of tops in that colour… These are just right for pairing up in matchy outfits! I’m always on the lookout for trousers/leggings that I can wear with my trainers too – I’m pretty much living in them on weekends!

As much as I love all this layering up in natural tones, I am looking forward to bringing out some lighter colours for my spring/summer wardrobe. I’m thinking light denim & white t-shirts of every variety. Bliss!

MY DRUGSTORE BEAUTY FAVOURITES

Admittedly. I don’t actually use that many drugstore products. I’m a complete sucker for packaging, and regularly end up purchasing the high-end stuff because it looks freaking amazing on my dresser. I know, it’s really bad. Having said that, I have got a few products that I regularly head into Boots to stock up on – I’d rather have a few that I’ve realized I religiously love, rather than a whole load of stuff I’ll never use.

When it comes to what’s on my repurchase list, these are the items I’m always heading back for!
Garnier Micellar Water / Garnier Moisturiser / Carmex / Garnier Eye Cream
Although I tend to lean towards high-end makeup (much to the disapproval of my bank balance), I pretty much only use drugstore skincare. In fact, most of my skincare routine is made up of budget options, as I’ve always found plenty that works for me. Garnier is a favourite of mine – it’s super cheap and doesn’t create a whopping skin disaster for me. With oily skin, I love their gel like moisturizers as I feel like they’re hydrating without leaving my face feeling greasy. The Micellar Water is another staple in my cleansing routine, as it does everything I need and lasts forever. Big bargain.

Another favourite I’m always stocking up on is Carmex lip balm. As a serial lip chewer I get through loads of balms, but this is the one I always go back to. It’s brilliant for chapped lips and it’s sort of tingly, making your pout feel extra pouty.
Maybelline Eraser Eye Concealer / Rimmel Loose Powder / L'Oreal Liquid Liners
On the makeup front, I just have a few items that have made it into my day-to-day routine. For loose powder, I’m happy to use a cheaper one as all I really want to see is my oily t-zone mopped up. I’ve used this Rimmel one for a good while now and it does just that. Oh, and when I drop it (which is inevitable with any sort of loose product) there won't be tears when I have to hoover it all up.

A concealer favourite at the minute would be Maybelline Eraser Eye, one I thought I’d try out for upping my contouring game. I went for the lightest shade, so I can really get my under eye nice and bright – this one layers up well so I'm forever packing it on. I've gone through a couple of higher end concealers recently, and this one comes up just as good.

Annnd L’Oreal eyeliners. The liner in this shot isn’t my complete favourite, but the one I’ve been loving I’ve used up & need to go repurchase (Super Liner Perfect Slim). I just find that the liners I’ve tried from L’Oreal are so much easier to apply, especially for someone that struggles with that slick winged look. I can manage much easier with something that's more like a felt tip.
Real Techniques Sponge / Real Techniques Buffing Brush
I could have added a whole range of Real Techniques brushes to this post, but I think a lot of us know they’re pretty guuuurd. My favourite is the buffing brush, as I can use this for liquid and powder base makeup. I’ll use it to fuzz out any streaks in my foundation, then buff in my powder to set everything. I really need to head out and get another one, as I’m using a whole load of brush cleanser inbetween!

My equal favourite for foundation is Real Techniques’ answer to the Beauty Blender. I’m bloody obsessed with this one! When I’m after heavier coverage I’ll grab this and pat in foundation ‘til my heart’s content. I would say use it wet though – when I try using it dry now I feel like I’m stroking a dog backwards or something.

LOUNGEWEAR LOOKBOOK

Loungewear being a trend has made my life a happier place for the foreseeable future. Essentially, I can now live my life in pyjama like clothing. Brilliant. I probably spent the start of winter dressing quite smart (the shirt and skinny jeans combo has been my go-to), so it's nice to now turn to more casual clothing. I do think you can dress this sort of thing up too - I went with that choker/neckerchief for the first outfit, and a turtle neck for the third just to smarten up those fleecy jumpsuits. They're another level of comfy so I'm going to get as much wear out of them as possible!

I've got all the product info in the video description - there is a lot of Boohoo involved, but I've just been loving their casual sets recently!

ISSUES YOU'LL NEED TO OVERCOME IN BLOGGING

With blogging, comes great responsibility. Lol. I'm kidding. Partly. I know really that blogging is pretty much fun and games... However, I also think that there are some stumbling blocks that you encounter, that you end up having to get your head around before you can work out the situation. After 3 ish (is it that long?! It could be longer!) years of blogging, I've definitely come across a fair few blogger issues that I've now learnt to deal with. These are the five biggies that I reckon most of us will have had experience with, and the ones that I think I've now sussed out.

Knowing when to say no.

This was one I struggled with for a while, because with blogging I feel like you never want to seem ungrateful. At the same time, people can take the p*ss with bloggers. Learning when to say no was a big deal for me, and I think I've really had to work on finding the balance with being firm yet polite. I've had times when I've had to put my foot down, and most of the time the response has been positive - I think brands really value your integrity as a blogger! I usually go with gut feelings - if I think it's not right for me, then it probably isn't.

Being okay with looking at yourself.

In detail. And in HD. From every angle. All the freaking time. Then you've actually got to be okay with that. Okay with 90million pores that could swallow up a small village. I honestly think if I didn't blog I wouldn't be aware of half the things about my appearance that I am now. But then, I'm looking at myself through the lens of a DSLR camera which unfortunately picks up everything. To the naked eye, who actually notices all that detail?! Blogging for me can lead to a lot of over analysis, but eventually I just got used to it. If anything, I've seen that many terrible pictures of myself that I'm now pretty blasé about it - I'm over caring that one eyebrow is Prada and the other is Primark.

Learning to judge your own worth.

There's no denying there's a lot of money involved with blogging these days. From little paid ads on your page to the bigger campaign stuff, working out what you should actually be valuing yourself at is tough! Admittedly, there have been times when I've had no idea how to judge what I'm 'worth' as a blogger... When people start asking about money it's a bit like 'you mean I can get paid for any of this?!'. After a while though you do begin to get a better idea. I've found talking to other bloggers about it has been helpful, as most are completely lovely about discussing it.

Having blogging ups and downs.

I've had so many times when I've been ready to sack off blogging all together. I tend to have peaks and troughs - sometimes I love it, then I'll have occasions where I'm ready to pop my internet bubble. There'll be times I feel super inspired and want to write a million and one posts, and others where I'd rather sit on Bloglovin' looking through amazing content and feeling sorry for myself because I can't think of bugger all to write. The grumpy blogging times usually don't last long for me, so I've learnt to see it through, get re-inspired and just stop being an all round misery.

Dealing with negativity.

I'm not going to lie, there are times when someone's put an unnecessary comment on my Instagram and all I really want to reply is 'you're actually horrible and I hate you'. It probably would make me feel a widgy bit better, but I don't like to let negativity get to me. I totally get that putting yourself on the internet does leave you open to everyone's opinion, but there's a line between constructive criticism and being rude. The fact is, not every person is going to like what you do, and accepting that is something I got used to quickly. For all the niceness that comes your way, there will always be the odd Debbie Downer and as much as it can bug me (it's always the odd nasty comment that sticks with you, isn't it?!) learning to just think 'whatever' helps me be a much happier blogger.
