NEW IN: GREY

Antique Pot, Silver - H&M & Pandora, Watch - c/o Shore Projects, Camera Case, iPad Case - eBay, Macbook Sleeve - eBay, Knitted Trousers - ZARA

I guess I should probably be thinking ahead to SS15, but my head is still telling me to go for everything grey - my fave this season. Yeah it's probably been a bit over done now, but I still like it as a change from monochrome. There are a few bits thrown in this post that aren't 'new in' as such but there all things I'm not sure I've probably mentioned.

So grey wise - firstly it was the gadget related bits & bobs. I've included these because if you're bothered about your shoes you're bothered about that iPad looking cute. Ha. Well, for me I like to keep everything looking smart. I only ever buy stuff like this off eBay. Why would I spend £30 on a case that I can get for just over a fiver on there?! I'd been lusting over the mock-marble case for the Macbook (in true copycat style.. bloggers seem to be mad for the marble thing at the minute, myself included) and ended up getting this grey felt cover and the little flip case for my iPad. The Macbook sleeve is one of my best eBay purchases in ages! It was only £7 and it looks way more schmancy than you'd expect. I also popped my camera case in there. It's fits my Samsung NX Mini just right and makes it look extra cute popped in my handbag. YAY for eBay.

I will quickly mention the trousers as I've had quite a lot of comments on Instagram about these. I got them in store last week and I don't think they're online anymore - I spent months looking for them after I originally saw them at full price. If you're after a pair I'd say hunt them down in your local ZARA. It took a few trips to their sale before they had these back in but it was worth it to get them for £9! Now wishing I'd bought a couple of pairs because I will definitely wear them out.

OMBRE HAIR: THE LOWDOWN

I get quite a lot of questions about my hair, mostly since I got rid of the roots and went for this grown out ombre sorta thaaang. I go to a little local salon (The Basement) who always whizz my hair into a dream so thought I'd tick off any questions in one go.

THE COLOUR

This is the bit I get most questions about. I was never obsessed with the whole ombre thing, but I do now love the grown out blonde sort of look opposed to my corn growing on tarmac look when I needed to go get my roots done. I'll always like the full blonde thing, but it is a bit of a pain to keep up with. When I changed it up I asked for roots that looked like they'd grown out naturally, fading into my original blonde. I took plenty of pictures, mostly because I'm crap at explaining things so this made life a lot easier. Colour wise, the darker part is a slightly warmer version of my naturally ashy roots. The blonde mostly stays the same, although I might have a few extra highlights popped in if I want to go a bit lighter higher up. I also live by toner for getting rid of any brassiness. The thing I love about ombre hair is that you don't have to be constantly going to the hairdressers. I can leave it 12 or so weeks and not have awful roots. Winner.

THE CUT

When it comes to getting my hair cut I am a bit precious about those split ends. Yeah, I know they're looking totally straggly, but they're taking me just below my bra strap and that I like. I do try to be brave every so often and get a good inch or so taken off every other trip to the hairdressers. All I ask for is a straight, blunt cut. I love seeing that it's a nice, sharp finish - plus it makes it look a million times healthier. I would say if you're wanting to grow your hair don't feel pressured into the BS that cutting your hair helps it to grow. Grow healthy, yeah, but it ain't suddenly going to start sprouting from your head like weeds. When I was growing my hair I just stuck to the bare minimum sort of trims. Now I'm happy with the length I don't mind having a bit extra lopped off. Having a hairdresser you can trust to not leave you having that 'errrmygahhhd I asked for a trim & I've got a bob' moment is always handy.

THE STYLE

On a whole, it's always curls for me (or some sort of dishevelled look). I just think with ombre styles it shoes off the colour so much more. I usually stick in a bit of a wave with my Enrapture Totem Styler, but for this salon trip we tried out the Babyliss Pro Perfect Curl. Have you seen this thing being used?! Mind. Blown. How it works without creating a total disaster I don't know, but it does give you those 'perfect' looking curls. They lasted me the rest of the weekend too. LOVE.

So, that's the lowdown on my current hair. I say current, but I don't actually change things up much so it'll probably stay like this for a good while longer!  If you are in the Sheffield area it's worth popping into The Basement. I've been going to my hairdresser (ask for Katie) for years now and the team there are really lovely.

BLOGGING: EXPECTATION VS. REALITY

This is probably the realest post I've done. These days with blogging it feels like there's a big pressure to have this Instagram worthy life and in reality, we’re all normal and we eat crisp sandwiches and use dry shampoo for a little longer than we should. I'm okay with having a bit of a giggle at my less than glamorous side, so here goes with a few 'blogging realities'.

Also a little disclaimer - I am definitely not suggesting the 'expectation' is yours truly or sticking my fishing rod out for compliments. I just thought this might be a good representation. Anyhoo, enjoy!

Good skin day VS. Breakouts

MAKEUP IS A BEAUTIFUL THING. I haven't got the worst skin in the world, but I still have acne breakouts alongside scars from previous skin disasters. The reality is that plenty of makeup, good lighting and filters all help a sister out.

Everything looking schmancy VS. MESS

For me, getting that 'everything in place' sort of picture takes a whole lot of mess. I take pictures like this on a piece of  MDF painted white which ends up surrounded by a plethora of crap that I've spread about in the process. The bit that's in shot is always a tiny portion of the chaos I've created & I'd like to think that I'm not the only blogger that leaves a trail of disruption along the way.

Posing like a poseymcposeron VS. Not so flattering

LOL. Best picture of me ever. Yeah, this is a bit of an exaggeration but the point I'm trying to make is that for every good picture there will be a load more that aren't so great. Knowing how to stand and what angle works well makes the world of difference.. I’m okay with my figure, but any sort of thigh gap can easily disappear and be quickly replaced with a sticky-out food baby. We all have good and bad pictures and I can be honest and say that some of the truly horrifying ones won’t make it as far as the internet.

Yummy food VS. This

Bloggers don't eat Pinterest-perfect food everyday. I wish we did, but we don't. Admittedly, I am the sort that always takes pictures of food to upload on social.. When it's something that looks tasty. Does anyone want to see a picture of the Pot Noodle sandwich (yes, I'm RANK..) I’m having for lunch on Instagram? I highly doubt it. It's not all quinoa porridge and amazing triple stacked burgers.. A lot of the time it's more fish finger sandwiches & microwave noodles. NOM.

Heels VS. Slippers

It's rare that I'm actually wearing the outfit that I'm typing up about. I take the vast majority of my blog pictures at the weekend, which means I mostly finish off posts at a later date. Usually I'll be typing up blog posts in my dressing gown and slippers with my hair in a scruffy bun. I love getting dolled up, but I also love pyjamas like Kanye loves Kanye.

So, that's a peak into my 'real' side of blogging. Yeah, sometimes I am dolled up with my hair looking swishy, but there are also plenty of times when I'm in my dressing gown, eating Supernoodles and quickly skipping through the blog pictures where I look like a thumb.

WHAT'S IN MY BAG

Bag - c/o Missguided, Nail File - Leighton Denny, Gum, Samsung NX Mini Camera, Purse, iPod, Maybelline Lipstick, Swarovski Pen, The Wet Brush (if you love Tangle Teezers you'll love these!), Sally Hansen Hard As Nails, Herve Leger Perfume, Pencil Case

Answer? A whole load of rubbish. Essential rubbish though. Yeah it'd be nice if my handbag was full of a few more fancy things, but really what I need is an endless supply of chewing gum and bog standard hair bobbles for wayward hair. I'm definitely the Mary Poppins sort when it comes to handbags.. Dashing out the door with just my bank card and car keys just isn't my kind of thing. I need a safety blanket of stuff. Alongside numerous screwed up receipts, crumbs and empty packets of crisps. Glaaaamorous. Lol.

My main essentials (other than the tradition purse, phone etc.) are nail stuff, my camera and my iPod. Nails wise I just can't deal with getting an annoying snag that desperately needs filing. That nail file does come everywhere with me - it's one of those that's supposed to last you 25 years (not a chance with how often I lose things..) without getting all worn down. It's not cheap for a nail file but definitely worth investing in. On the camera front we all know I love my little Samsung NX Mini. I've used this so much now that I'm definitely glad I got it. My DSLR is still my baby, but the Samsung is just so much more practical to use when I'm pottering about. Lastly, my iPod. Full of totally cringe music for me to sing to on my M1 commute.

P.S. I can confirm that a fancy-pants pen (talking about the glitzy Swarovski one) does in fact make you feel a tiny bit more Anna Wintour on your drabbest of days.

THE LONG COAT

Hair by The Blow, Shirt - c/o Daisy Street, Coat - c/o Boohoo, Trousers - H&M, Bag - Topshop, Boots - Forever 21

I probably should have named this 'The Coat I've Spent My Winter In', due to the fact I've just about worn this one out with relentless wear. I love those big, fabulous looking Kimye style coats so this is my inexpensive version to see me through the chilly season. I've decided I'm going go treat myself next winter and get one that'll last me a lifetime - I just think this classic sort of style is one that'll come back into fashion throughout the years. Plus it's amazing just how much warmer it is to be wrapped up in a coat that comes just above your ankles, opposed to the usual thigh length thaaangs.

This outfit is actually what I was wearing when I popped over to The Blow for some hair titivating - hence why my hair looks a lot more Rapunzel like than it usually does! I forgot how much good hair finishes off an outfit.. I need to stop just dashing out the door with that dishevelled look. Princess curls every day of the week puhhhlease.

VIDEO: QUICK GET READY WITH ME

Right, I'm not going to ramble on in this one as it's just a quickie plug for my new video. I was going to film my morning routine sort of thing, but really, my morning routine ain't really that glam. This one is more of a snippet as I get ready. I've been wearing a lot of this kind of 'work-casual' thing on weekends.. I'm usually just jeans and a smarter top for work but on my day off it's quite nice to dress up like a jet setter. Lol. I dunno, I just like this smart-casual look at the minute. The minute summer comes I'll be back to ditsy dresses and all things super girly.

Anyhoo, the video's below. It's only a short one but it took me flipping ages.. Why is editing so hard?!

P.S, thank you for all the love with yesterday's post! I've been loving that kind of daft chatty thing so it's nice to see quite a few of you have had a read!

10 THINGS YOU LEARN FROM BLOGGING

I really enjoyed writing last week's post (and seeing that some of you could relate), so I thought I'd come backatchya with another blogging themed list. When I started blogging I had no idea what it was all about and what it could lead to. I still have days when I feel like I've no idea what the fudge I'm doing, but I think I've managed to learn a lot along the way.. whether it's a new skill or a life lesson that sticks.

1. Social media will be your best friend.
I guess coming from someone who works in social media this is a little biased, but I'd say a lot of bloggers would agree with this one. Blogging tips I’m not really good at, but if I did have one this would be it. I love being involved in all the social side of it, even if it’s only for a nosey at the latest must have product. It’s a great for getting your blog out there and it's nice to have a whole little network of people interested in the same kind of stuff.

2. Photography is a (long) learning process.
How can two pictures taken a second after each other look like you've taken them on different days, in different climates and in a completely different spots? Photography will forever baffle me, but when I think back to starting with blurry pictures taken on my phone I feel like I’ve done alright. I'm still by no means an expert, but it's one of those things you can play around with and learn as you go.

3. People can want a lot for little.
I say 'can', because on the whole brands are great to work with.. But I would say that there are times when I've felt like people take the mick a little. There's a lot expected from bloggers these days - professional looking shots, good social presence, quick turnover with posts.. it's one of those growing lists. In reality, and what I think people need to remember, is that most of us are normal folk having a bash at all this stuff.

4. Girls can actually be nice.
I left school thinking most girls were frightening.  All the bitchiness and popularity contests definitely put me off and I stuck to a few close girl friends. I think blogging has helped a lot in restoring my faith. I've come across so many lovely ladies over the last few years, who actually want to be nice and are happy when things go well for you, rather than peeing on your parade. I'm not saying every blogging lady is a saint, but the whole little community has shown me that not every girl is going to be mean.

5. You'll find plenty of things you're actually good at.
Whether it's sticking together collages or organising your time with military precision, there are plenty of new talents to acquire through blogging. Along the way I’ve learnt that there are things I can do that I never would have thought I would have been able to. These days about 50% of what I add to my CV is stuff I've picked up through blogging.

6. You'll pick up on things about your appearance that you never would have noticed.
For me, I definitely think blogging makes you very self aware. Not in a 'ooh I love looking at my face' kind of way, just in the sense that if you're taking a lot of pictures that involve yourself, you're going to notice stuff. Would I have noticed all the things I've picked up on from a few Facebook pictures from nights out? I doubt it. I feel like taking blog pictures means you know every little bit of yourself, which isn't always what you need when you've had a massive break out or your eyebrows have gone AWOL.

7. Self satisfaction is one of the best feelings.
When you've got something you really can't wait to blog about and there's that little vision of how it's going to look, it's always nice to see the final result and be happy with what you've done. I try to treat blog posts like little school projects these days.. Do a bit of planning, create the content then finish it all off. When it finally goes live and you're pleased with how it's gone it's like GIVE ME A GOLD STAR.. or chocolate, chocolate will do.

8. How to be organised.
Sometimes I feel like my life is scheduled. Ha. Starting blogging as a scatter brained student quickly helped me become much more of a ‘grown up’. Yeah, I still forget to do stuff but usually I find scheduling helps me keep things in check. Having said that, I did manage to tweet about a post for ages though before realising I’d not actually pressed publish. Everyone has slip ups..

9. Comparison is the thief of joy.
This will always be one of my favourite quotes. It doesn't matter what people tell you or how hard you try, comparison is always going to be a natural thing. Even if you're doing super amazing, there's always that little niggly part that tells you so & so is doing better. I think it's something you have a learn to deal with when you're blogging. There are so many people to compare yourself to and it's easy to get too focused on. Yeah, they might be doing amazing but that doesn't mean you're not too.

10. How to make yourself look a lot more attractive than you actually are.

LOL. Can I have a Valencia filter just for everyday life please? I'm just going to put it out there that it can take a long time to get that amazing selfie or blog picture, and I'm under no illusion that I look quite as good without the help of a filter, decent lighting and a whole lot of makeup. It doesn't take long to work out how to take a picture of yourself to avoid looking like a thumb. So yeah, all these little tricks we use definitely help.

So they're my main ones. Feel free to pop yours below, I love hearing about this kind of thing!

THE BLOW: BIG BOUNCY CURLS

'The Italian' - thanks to The Blow

Got my hair diiiid. Ow how I wish I could have hair like this all the time! Over the weekend I got the chance to go to The Blow, the new spot to get your blow dry looking uhhmazing. I always think Sheffield is a bit behind the times - we don't even have a Pret (tres tragic)  and there isn't half the fancypants stuff there is darrrn in Landaaan. Thankfully that's changing, and we now have these glamorous little hot spots. I'd never actually had a proper blow dry so I was feeling mega schmancy and glamorous.. if I ever get rich this is totally becoming a regular thing.

So you head to The Blow, pick one of their suitably fabulous styles from their lookbook and get your hair whizzed up into something beautiful. I went for The Italian, big bouncy curls that last longer than any I've ever tried doing myself. My hair is really fine and will do absolutely nothing if I let it.. It's favourite thing in the world is to just hang there like a limp lettuce. It doesn't matter how many YouTube tutorials I watch or how many times I get a round brush stuck in my hair, curls like this just aren't something I'm ever going to manage. This look was the result of blowdrying, tongs & some serious zhushing up. Ohhh isn't it lovely to have a proper pamper sesh?!

There are loads of other key styles to go for so you can mix it up depending on what look you're wanting. There was a girl in having The Harlem while I was there.. I probably wimped out of having something so bold but wowzers it is beautiful. I definitely want to try something more adventurous next time I pop in.

If you're in the Sheffield area it's definitely worth getting your 'do' fixed up. Bye bye horrid bit of hair that won't curl, hello princess hair!

RECENT FAVOURITES

I can't do monthly favourites. I'm too unorganised and basically I don't actually mix things up enough to come up with a whole load of other bits & bobs every month.. Ha. Recent it is. Here are the things I've been loving as of late.

Triangle Bras - By Jody Shafton
UGH I love this sort of basic. Really simple but the kind of thing you get so much wear out of. This one is handmade and lush for layering up under anything slightly sheer.. Bye bye ugly nude bra you are now obsolete.

Vivienne Westwood Clutch
I had this for graduation as an extra special treat from my mamma. I'm ashamed to say that since then, it has actually stayed tucked away. This isn't because I'm not in love with it, but because I'm frightened I'm going to wear it out before I have something suitably fabulous to use it for. It's just too pretty to be wasted on trips to do the weekly shop and what not. For now I'm going to start using it for the slightly special stuff - nice trips for lunch and that kind of thing.  Forever impressed with my mum's impeccable taste.

Ipod Nano
I know this may sound odd to some, but I'm not much of a 'music' kind of girl. I like a good bit of Beyonce or Rihanna, but admittedly on the whole my taste in music is pretty bad. Since getting an iPod though I am now thinking how did I manage without. I spend about 2 & a half hours a day in the car and there is only so much of Grimmers & Greg James' chat that I can cope with. My commute has certainly improved now I can stick 'Drunk In Love' on and sing like I am actually drunk the whole way home.

Tumblr
I kind of missed the Tumblr stage - I don't think I've ever been close to being cool enough for it, especially as a teen. Recently though I have got a little bit addicted. Oh isn't it easy to get obsessed with looking at incredibly amazing people?! Sometimes, and this is going to sound really terrible, but I actually run out of things to stalk on the internet and then I'm like 'what the fudge do I do with my life now?'.. And that's where Tumblr comes in. Ha. Send help. Even still, I'm jumping on the Tumblr bandwagon late for all things inspiring.

COLLARS UP

Shirt - c/o Daisy Street, Trousers - Primark, Slip Ons - Primark, Bag - c/o La Moda

I think I might have left a toe or two being after almost ending up with frostbite while taking these pictures. It was actually a good few days since it had snowed and I completely underestimated how deep it would be up the top end of our garden. Nothing major, but definitely more than my slip on shoes could handle.. You can't see them, mostly because they're covered in bloody snow. I was planning some work outfits (makes life a million times easier when I'm rushing around at 6am with a pack of Belvita in hand) and ended up taking a few snaps while I was at it. Even though I did almost freeze a limb off I do like wintery looking pictures. I look back on them in the summer and wonder how the heck it was ever so cold!

I've gone dead comfy here. I can't think of anything worse than being stuck at work in the trousers you have to jump about to get in or something too constricting. So basically, I dress like I'm wearing a tent. Ha. I do love everything oversized though.. I feel like I can wrap up and hide a bit in a big baggy shirt! I've just worn this one with those wide leg trousers I bought a while back from Primark. They're really simple but the kind of thing you get loads of wear out of.. Whether it's work or something comfy for more casual stuff.

5 COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT BLOGGERS

These days, everyone wants to stick their two penneth in about bloggers. It's bound to happen when just about everyone and their grandma has a blog. You put yourself out there and people have an opinion, which is only natural. Anyhoo, these are 5 of the common misconceptions I think a lot of people (myself included) come up with about us blogging folk.

1. Life is glamorous.

I guess even I think this from time to time. You see bloggers going to all these fancy-schmancy events and think life is all parties, cocktails and cupcakes with a brand name on. Yep, partly so. If it's got a mini buffet and a photo booth bloggers are going to be mad for it. I rarely get the chance to go to events, but when I do I'll definitely be overkilling it on social with glamorous pictures.  It is all rather fun, but there's a lot of completely un-glamorous stuff too. Will I be letting everyone know when I've been out taking blog pictures and stood in doggy do-do? NOPE.

2. Bloggers are all really confident.

It's not really surprising that people assume you'll be full of it when you post hundreds of pictures of yourself on the Internet being all posey-mc-poserson. Am I in real life the person I am on my blog? Probably not. In real life we're not all super confident. I used to be mega shy before blogging and I'm still hugely socially awkward (I end up swearing a lot and I mumble.. brilliant). I can't stand being the centre of attention and wouldn't want people to analyse me in real life the way they do on here, but I think the virtual world makes it a lot easier to be confident. For me, blogging was initially an easy way to have the confidence to say what I wanted to say and be who I wanted to be. Keyboard warriors are a good example.. are they going to tell you you've got crap hair in real life? Doubt it.

3. It's all about the money.

When bloggers have free makeup coming out of their armpits and enough Triangl bikinis to last them the next 10 years of holidays I can understand thinking this. Most bloggers started blogging for nothing and still continue to blog whether it's making them a huge wage or not. Yeah, it might be a nice little bonus but I'd say for the majority of bloggers it's not the be all and end all. Blogging is still my little hobby, not a way for me to be rolling about in a bed of money.

4. Blogging is easy peasy.

Ohmerrrgahhhd it ain't. The times I've spent getting annoyed that the lighting has fudged up every shot or that I'm pulling some ridonkulous goofball face that's ruined the perfect picture. It's not just a case of taking a few snaps.. there are photography problems and trying to edit things right and having broken WIFI at the end of it all. I don't want this to sound too 'First World Problems' (pop your violins away folks).. It is a lot easier when you enjoy it, but it's definitely not simple.

5. Bloggers are obsessed with appearance.

All bloggers are bothered about is lipstick and how how they look in high waisted trousers and having the perfect ombre hair style.. No. I might like a good selfie but I'm also totally okay with heading to ASDA in ugly sweatpants looking like death warmed up.

So, they're my 5 most common misconceptions. This is kind of different for me but I like this sort of chatty thing. Hopefully at least some of you out there can relate!

WORKDAY FACE

Real Techniques Brushes, Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette, Estée Lauder Double Wear (2C3), MAC Pro Longwear Concealer, Maybelline Line Refine White Eyeliner, Benefit Brow Zings (Light/Medium), Estée Lauder Double Wear Gel Eyeliner, MAC Lipstick (usually Honey Love or Sheer Plum ), MAC Cream Colour Base (Paintlerly), Illamasqua Highlighter

I think I've probably mentioned the products I use to take me from a face that would frighten small children to my normal everyday look, but I thought I'd do a proper post today and get it all covered off. I've gone for my 'Workday Face', seen as that's what I usually go for. Monday - Friday we're all pretty simple, Saturday & Sunday I'm ready for smokey eyes, long lashes and lippy in every colour.. It's not like I trowel it on, but I do love getting dolled up at the weekend when I've got time to make a bit more effort.

So, the products I go for on a work day are all pretty basic. I don't faff about too much because I can guarantee that by the end of the day I'll have managed to rub an eyebrow off anyway. Oh the joys. Instead, I go for stuff that's going to (hopefully, although some may disagree) make me look awake. Nothing too heavy, plenty of concealer and a bit of white eyeliner to brighten up my 'I stayed up all night watching Netflix' eyes. I'll throw on some highlighter too just to give my skin a bit of life.. With winter in full swing I can end up looking like a zombie. Naaaht great.

If I'm feeling like my face really needs sorting out then I'll add a bit of the Estée Lauder eyeliner.. Although I use it with caution. I'm totally crap at eyeliner and 6am attempts at it aren't always a success. If you're an eyeliner pro, I salute.

THE CHUNKY BRAID

I'm into braids at the minute. Maybe it's all the Frozen thingymabobby.. looking like the real life Elsa wouldn't be so bad. I've mostly been watching a lot of YouTube and totally dreaming about Rapunzel hair like Amber Fillerup. She does the best hairstyles. My hair isn't half as thick and fabulous, but I have a bash at something similar every now and then. I'm a creature of habit with my hair so I have to actually push myself to have my hair anything other than down. It's just a comfort blanket having your hair around your face!

How I did it is all in the video, although it's more of a guide rather than a tutorial.. Do you know how difficult it is to plait in a reflected screen and actually make sure you're getting what needs to be in shot?! I struggled. Thankfully it's the kind of thing that (I think..) looks better a bit messy. Perfect for my less than perfect plaiting skills!
